Ooh, crowntown100 – cutting to the chase!

OK, this gets complicated because I work for a US university. But I get paid $147,000 for working between September and May, then if I have raised enough grant money I also get paid for working in June and July. With one or two other bits and pieces thrown in, I earn around $183,000 per year – that’s around £125,000 per year. But believe me, it’s taken years and years to get to this level!

And of course, the tax man takes a lot of it away!

Enough to live comfortably with a wee family. Probs because i did medicine first.

Serious consideration: If you are unsure about whether to medicine or science. Do medicine first because you’ll earn more money and you can still pursue science if you want. If you do science first you may have to pay to do a second degree and you’ll be earning less as a scientist.

But it’s not about the money crowntown…The bling aint the thing….

      Hi crowntown100.

I’m not sure anyone will answer this exactly (?) as it’s a very personal question!

I’d give ballpark figues; after university you’ll be looking at £5,000-18,000/year research stipends (for PhDs mainly, Masters [MSc] courses are more often self-funded) depending where you work, where you live, who funds you, how much the work and living costs are, what you do etc. etc., which will probably increase a bit year on year.

The first job after the PhD (post-doc) will probably be >£20k but again that depends where you work.

So, compared to some jobs it’s ok but for the amount of work, compared to other jobs, it can be depressing sometimes!! It depends what you want from life I suppose.
