Hi kw28 The Royal Navy own quite a large amount of land and that comes as a surprise to most people as they think we just have 3 Naval Bases and some ships.

It is important to manage our land estate and any potential environmental impacts for 2 reasons:

      a) the law requires we do that eg we have to protect certain species of plants and animals on our estate so that they contribute to the overall biodiversity of the UK and we have to store our waste in a safe manner so that it doesn’t leach and contaminate the land.

      b) If we didn’t work in partnership with the land and keep it to a good standard by minimising our environmental impact, then access to the training areas would not be possible and this would impact on what we call “operational training” eg learning to fire a gun, climb ropes and camp overnight.

      Hope that answers your question!!:)
