      Hi cheeseneese,

Difficult one – there are so many good bits. Understanding the meaning behind an equation can be an incredible experience sometimes (geeky as it sounds) – it’s like getting a special glimpse into how the universe works. Reading about other people’s research and learning something new is also pretty good – as is finding out something new myself. And there’s something very satisfying about designing, running and interpreting an experiment that generates beautiful data.

Cheeseneese. You are a busy cheddar-legged soul.

My favourite part of my research is a video i made documenting the death of a white blood cell over 12hrs. It shows all the processes that happen to the cell by lighting up fluorescent dyes at key moments and provides a beautiful illustration of a complex process live.

The cell initially roams around like a demented slug but then it stops and becomes all round like somebody just gave it a slap. Then it does a crazy disco-boogie and throwing out what looks like lots of arms and legs (membrane protrusions) and then it it glows green as its membrane changes before glowing red as its membrane fails. Sweeet!
