One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez or possibly The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy (Gentleman) by Laurence Sterne.

The first book introduced me to magic realism which is a genre of book i’ve come to love (see Salman Rushdie, Louis de Bernieres as other examples) and the second is a cornucopia of amazing nonsense….

Sterne talks at length in this book about the importance of a regal and impressively large nose to success in life and quotes a Dr Slawkenbergius as his source. You’ll note Andrewm has a fine nose on him. Perhaps explains his successful career.

      Hi elmo97,

probably The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy – a profoundly moving book! But close to the top of the list are:

Use of Weapons by Iain M Banks
The Fifth Element by Terry Pratchett
The Jewel in the Crown by Paul Scott (mainly because this is what I’m reading at the moment!)

Dune (+ 5 sequels) by Frank Herbert.
Best sci-fi I’ve read (though I haven’t started on my pile of Isaac Asimov yet, to be fair).
