      Hi nathanlee,

Three things I think you need if you are interested in a career in science:

      1. A passion for discovery

      2. Good grades in science subjects at GCSE and A-level (including maths if possible)

      3. A desire to do stuff that you find exciting and worthwhile, rather than make money

You also need to be a little bit stubborn – I remember my careers advisor telling me not to become a research scientists because it was boring – luckily I ignored him!

Nathanlee and Buzzers, I really hope this means that you two are considering it as a career option. I would say…’Don’t do it. The glory is mine all mine, it’s my precious, mines, nasty hobbitses! ‘

Then I would say ‘go for it’. I think it’s a great career with options to do a massive variety of things. Take a look at the incredible diversity of jobs folk on this site are doing.

If you enjoy it and you find it interesting, just go for it. You can always do something else if you find it’s not for you.

The skills you gain on your way are really valuable in loads of other jobs; most employers respect and seek science graduates. It’s never going to be a waste of your time, you’ll learn lots and probably enjoy it too 🙂

Hi nathanlee! Work hard, read a lot, be open minded to new ideas and theories but don’t expect to earn loads of money!:)
