Are you one of my competitors? As scientists, i’m sad to say you have to learn to play your cards close to your chest in certain circles because there are vicious folk out there who steal ideas and don’t apply the same riogorous standards to the work so that they can publish it quicker and ‘scoop’ the person they’ve stolen from.

It’s a competitive environment and some people try to get to the top by stepping on necks. The people who are most respected in science are those with unquestionable integrity who combine excellent work with being a decent human being.

Having said that. We have found that a drug we’re investigating stops inflammation in its tracks. We’ve looked at this on a cellular level and in models of inflammatory disease. Inflammatory diseases are ones where the body’s natural response to infection overstays its welcome or happens when there’s no infection to fight. Examples are arthritis, asthma, smoking related lung disease (COPD) and inflammatory bowel disease.

Hi shawr, mtrewern, gandalf97 and hithere,

Apologies for a really late answer – this question has only just popped up on my screen!

Actually, I’ve just started a new job so I need to decide what research I am going to be doing. But my work with other people on developing new technologies is going OK. We’ve found out that some new things might be harmful if they are used in certain ways, but that in many cases we can learn how to use them safely.
