• Question: Do you think that taking all 3 sciences and maths at a level is worthwhile if I want to be a vet ??

      Hey u26durberk,

      Sure, do what you want to do! You could probably do without maths if you’re doing physics, unless maths is your favourite! It will certainly help, but I didn’t do maths A level so it’s clearly not essential.

      Veterinary training is very long, about 7 years after school in all.
      So, make sure that’s what you want to do, then check out which unis offer the best courses and what their requirements are 🙂

      Hello Durberk, see entry requirements for Edinburgh here: http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/vet/studying/uk-eu-school-leavers/entry-requirements or search for Uni of your choice ( I know Edinburgh is v. competitive)

      I think if you like and are good at 3 sciences and maths you should go for it. You need to box clever and maximise your chances of getting the required grades.

      I’d also speak to a vet (if you know one is best but most vets approachable about careers advice/ experience) about other things you might have to do to demonstrate how enthusiastic you are. If you can’t be bothereed with those you should think again.

      The reality is you need to get as good a grades as possible if you are going to succeed as Vet is the most competitive Uni subject.

      Hi I think the best thing for you to do would be to check this with your school career advisor as well as the universities you are thinking of applying to as they will be able to give you the best advice. At one stage I wanted to be a vet and at that time what you suggest would have been fine. Like I say though best to check with someone who is more up to date!

      Hi u26durberk,

      Things may have changed since I was at school, but I remember that to train as a vet, the three sciences were considered important. Then maths is always extremely helpful – it’s harder to really get into any of the science (but especially chemistry and physics) and understand them, without a decent understanding of maths.

      Thinking about this though, I’m not entirely sure why you would need physics to be a vet – apart from the fact that it’s far and away the best science subject!
