Yes, I organise weekly badminton courts for myself and a few colleagues. We play for one hour after work most weeks (unless we’re too busy or I forget to book the court!).
I also go to pilates some weeks, which is organised for our institute on-campus and it’s very cheap. Nice, relaxing and good to keep in shape.

I’m not a very sporty person but I think it’s important to do some exercise when you can.

I also live close to work so I walk there and back each day; a total of about 40 minutes, which would take about an hour for most people (because I walk very very fast, which everyone is quick to point out!).

Hello tjb, I’m really into sport. It’s really important to maintain interests other than work so that you don’t burn out. Science as a career does allow you to have extra-curricular interests because there’s scope for planning your working day. In medicine, however, you get stuck in a shift-system that you have little control over and work dictates your life.

My main sports are tennis and squash but I’ve played a lot of hockey, cricket, badminton and golf too.
At the moment I’m still recovering from an Achilles’ tendon rupture operation (like David Beckham) so I’ll not be playing the World Cup either (there’s that and the fact that scotland are too pish to qualify!)

Hi tjb27194 (nifty name by the way 😉 )

Sports outside science – does that mean you consider science a sport 🙂

A confession here – I never much enjoyed team sports. I was always the one that found every excuse to get out of games. I’m still the same I’m afraid (although I should add that I live in the USA now, where they have strange ideas about team sports anyway!).

Yes I love swimming and pilates. I have also been known to hit the odd tennis ball. Not strictly a sport but I also love walking in the countryside which I can access from the back of my house. Just perfect!

Hi tjb27194. In the last couple of years I have loved going Surfing (although I am not that good at it!) and watching the Surfers at Boscombe Pier, Bournemouth (where they have built the first UK artificial reef to improve the surf). I also used to do a lot of contemporary dance and have performed in a dance company (although not sure if you would call it a sport but rather an art form but it is exercise after all!!!):).
