Question: Do you like your work

It’s important to like work because you spend most of the time you’re not sleeping doing it. Work/Life balance is difficult but important and i would say that (on the whole) scientists are better at it than medical doctors.
Your work isn’t just about making money (though obviously that’s important). It defines a part of you (even if you don’t like that) and you can build up your self-esteem or lose it by being good/bad at your work. If you enjoy work you’re usually good at what you’re doing….

Hi geoff, cyberguy, lollypop and kw28. Yes, I really enjoy my work! No day is the same and with policy work, you often get to see the changes that occur as the result of writing policy for people to follow. I also get the chance to walk in beautiful fields (on nice sunny days!) and go out on the water in small boats and that was part of the attraction of going into environmental science in that I am not always in the office:)

OK!
Well, sometimes it’s very rewarding. If things are going well, you work hard, interesting results, boss is happy… good!
But other times it’s difficult. Maybe a lot of stuff goes wrong (whether that’s your fault or not; sometimes there’s nothing you can do about it, sometimes we [well I know I do anyway] do stupid things).
It can be hard to stay positive.
I’ve had other personal things going on outside of work that’s meant I’ve found it difficult to keep my motivation up and the stress is getting to me. However, my colleagues, friends and family have been really supportive and I’m grateful for them!
I hope I can finish my PhD, write a good thesis, get my degree and move on to even better things!
